All that Brass!

Who was Daisy Squelch and what was she famous for? Why did the Bean Brothers Brass Band have a rumble with James Walker’s Band in York and what did politics have to do with it? What is it about contesting and drinking? And how does the women’s suffrage movement link with banding? This week’s All That Brass delves into the lively history of brass bands in York and further afield – and there’s plenty of music too, from classics to Cuban and from sunshine soul to jazz trad and street in All That Brass, 8.00-9.00pm with Kate Lock.

The Poetry Show: FRIENDS, followed by Stairwell Books Presents: A NEW DAWN for The Poetry Show!

This coming Monday on The Poetry Show: FRIENDS, followed by Stairwell Books Presents: A NEW DAWN for The Poetry Show! plus news about launch events.

The Poetry Show is about poems for everyone: it’s not that stuff you learned in school. This is a podcast that aims to bring poems and poetic discussion to people who love poetry, to those of you who just aren’t all that sure, and to poetry novices…and maybe we can inspire you to try a poem for yourself. A word of warning: we might use a coupla edgy words. We’re kinda PG 13.

Every week, we will discuss a theme, and look at how four very different poets work with the theme to create a poem… Hopefully something for everyone! So we’ll each do a poem, and we’ll chat about that poem and move on to the next.

This episode has Rose, Alan, Becca Miles and special guest Kit Marshall! Today’s show is hopeful and positive. It’s about FRIENDS.

Is this where I break into James Taylor? Don’t we all need friends? Do YOU need friends? Or are they a necessary evil?

Are you the life of the party, or the one hunched over in the corner, talking to the house cat?

Do you have 5,972 close Facebook friends? or are you happily alone?

What does the word ‘FRIEND’ mean to you?

My poems about ‘friends’ were mostly written ages ago, so these are short, old poems. Kind of like me. Tune in to hear what Becca, Alan and Kit have to say about Friends.

Following our broadcast of S2.1 “Friends”, Alan, Rose and Becca will chat about Big Poetry Show news (Yay!!), Staxtonbury, and upcoming launches. Launch events include David Lee Morgan’s music and poetry event in Sheffield on May 17 at DINA Café, with, first, his visit on May 16 to York open mic BeSpeak (Black Swan, 7.30pm, free). The Poetry Show Season One: Confrontation; and Stairwell Books Presents: Sue Lister Confronting sexism, ageism and homophobia, as our guest for IWW.

What synergy! What a perfect fit! Our guest this week, Sue Lister MBE (awarded for “Equality, Diversity and the Arts in Yorkshire”), has spent her life thus far confronting bigotry, and promoting feminism. Also, Rose is baaaaaaaaack and oh so happy to chat with y’all.

First up, a rebroadcast of Season One’s The Poetry Show episode about Confrontation. Also known as: “You! Yeh, you! HEY YOU! Come over a here right now!”
Or….the passive aggressive version:
…..

Okay. Wait a minute. What exactly does ‘passive aggressive’ mean? I’ve seen it to refer to almost ANYTHING, such as a note left next to a pile of dirty dishes, or to sarcasm, or actual rudeness which doesn’t seem ‘passive’ but just ‘aggressive’. As for leaving a note: What else can you do if the roommate ducks you?

CONFRONTATION. Do you LIKE having it out with a nasty waiter or that rude clerk? Or does your tummy tighten up at the mere thought of asking the GP to investigate the blood pouring out of your, idk, ears? Do you thrill at the combativeness? Or do you dread it?
When I was younger, I dreaded it. But then in those days, my mom made every debate an argument, every argument a battle and every battle was WW III. She seemed to enjoy escalating a disagreement. Now, I like to confront unfair ness but won’t go out of my way to pick a fight. How about you?

* * * *

After The Poetry Show, Stairwell Books Presents: Sue Lister. Sue actually has had a few poems published by SWB, notably in MORE EXHIBITIONISM, our 2016 anthology of poetry and short stories, edited by Glenn Taylor. Sue has been on the front line of a lot of battles, from fighting for equality (that’s what her MBE is for) to combating ageism, sexism, and homophobia. Sue is on her way to becoming Two River Radio’s Reporter at Large, as she’ll soon sit down and chat with Jake Furby and, last week, met with Kate Lock. Join us to hear about combating the bad things while keeping your cool. Well, sort of.

Join the Audience for Ask York.

What is Ask York? Well – first ask yourself ‘”What are the burning issues affecting York today?”

Ask York is a brand new show for Two Rivers Radio in 2018 that seeks to discuss many of the pressing questions facing the city today – by raising the issues with an expert panel.  The panel will bring answers, raise new questions and perhaps even come up with some solutions!  –  all while enjoying a drink and maybe a bite to eat.

Two Rivers Radio welcomes you to be part of the Ask York audience at The Angel on the Green from 8pm on Wednesday 24th January.

There is seating for around 30 – so please arrive in good time to avoid disappointment.

The show will not be broadcast live, but will be recorded and broadcast the following Monday 29th at 2pm. You will be able to listen to the broadcast here: www.tworiversradio.stream – and we will be archiving the show on the website, too.

The recording will begin at 8:30 and last for approximately 1 hour.

Each month, we will put together a panel of local politicians, journalists, campaigners, business-people, academics and experts in all manner of fields to be quizzed by a live audience.

The host and panel are for the 24th are yet to be confirmed, but as we get confirmations we will be updating the event so watch this space!

This is your opportunity to ask questions of those in the City that are making and affecting the decisions we as a community all have to live with and to hear all sides of many contentious debates.

It would be great if those who wish to come and ask a question contact the show in advance so that we have an idea of numbers. If you could also indicate the topic that you wish to discuss (not necessarily the specific question) that would be very useful: email – tworiversradio@gmail.com

Although the recording begins at 8:30, you are welcome to arrive early. The Angel on the Green has a wonderful menu (available until 8pm) and a cosy bar serving an excellent range of hot and cold drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. There will also be time after the recording for audience and panel members to mingle and further discuss the topics raised.

So whether you have a question about housing, business rates, students, alcohol licencing, local services, health, education, road maintenance, recycling, benefits, green economy, use of public space, development of brownfield sites, universal credit, redevelopment, creating a Yorkshire Assembly, employment, Coney Street, making better use of the river, tourism, cultural diversity, equality or anything else — please get in touch.
