Glass Half Full

What can we do about plastic waste? It’s a regular item on #GlassHalfFullYork and in Monday’s show @KlockworksKate will have a return visit from John Mcgall of iamreusable and Rich Hearn of Planet South Bank to talk about a new shop window sticker scheme (as displayed in Robinson’s Cafe, pictured) and other recycling matters as Rich continues his journey to find out what eco conscious consumers can do. Kate will also be meeting the newly formed and named ‘Bishy Road Scrubbers’ led by Frankie Hayes, who are cleaning up the streets – of litter ( and going viral in the process). We meet Ned Hoste, New Chair of One Planet York and a leading light in sustainable design and social entrepreneurship with the Big Ideas Collective. And we find out about the forthcoming Walk, Cycle Festival from Sheridan Piggott and Joanne Mahon of York Bike Belles. What a show!

S2.3 The Poetry Show: ROLE PLAYING (no! not that kind. stop that.)  followed by Stairwell Books Presents: Return of the Mantra by Susie Williamson

The Poetry Show is about poems for everyone: it’s not that stuff you learned in school. This week, we talk with Becca about Larp: Live Action Role Play, which is, as Becca describes it, “a cross between Re-enactment, Fan Fiction, and camping.” Or…. something like that. Sometimes I just make stuff up. Becs said at least PART of that.

Anyway, when daughter Emily and I go to Anime conventions, I always go as Sally: I am forever putting myself back together after fate, and sometimes nasty people, rip me to shreds. Em goes as her OC du jour: Dead Marco, a motorcycle transformer, a fire-breathing Little Pony, or AU Frisk. What do OC and AU mean? Tune in and find out!

Stairwell Books Presents: Susie Williamson and RETURN OF THE MANTRA
After we learn all sorts of nerd lingo, it’s off to the AU created by Holmsfirth native Susie Williamson: a hot, drought-plagued land where the wild animals are gone, the men dig for crystals, it’s a hyper-capitalist society based on religion, and everyone worships a haughty, selfish just-won’t-die King. No, not Trump. Kinda close though.

Susie launches her sci-fi/fantasy novel RETURN OF THE MANTRA in Exeter later this week and in Holmsfirth in early June! We’ll discuss world building, investigating real life through speculative fiction, and human-made environmental disaster. Join us for role playing and alternative universes both on The Poetry Show and in Stairwell Books Presents.

The Poetry Show & Stairwell Books Presents

The Poetry Show  –  1-2pm

The Poetry Show talks about GRANDPARENTS followed by Stairwell Books Presents: Declan Minskip & barriers to writing: how can we surmount these?

The Poetry Show Season Two Episode Two is about our grands: the ones we inherit from our parents, the ones we find, the elders we may eventually become.

After that we have a Stairwell Books Presents discussion about writing, and barriers we may face before we even get started. Two Rivers producer Declan Minskip bravely endures Rose’s questions (eeek) (only kidding. I’m not scary….am I?) with planned input from Emily Drew. Can depression stop creativity dead or can we harness the isolation and introspection of at least a milder depression to tap our thoughts? No one will suggest we just “snap out of it.” Mental health issues will affect most of us at some point in our lives.

All that Brass!

Who was Daisy Squelch and what was she famous for? Why did the Bean Brothers Brass Band have a rumble with James Walker’s Band in York and what did politics have to do with it? What is it about contesting and drinking? And how does the women’s suffrage movement link with banding? This week’s All That Brass delves into the lively history of brass bands in York and further afield – and there’s plenty of music too, from classics to Cuban and from sunshine soul to jazz trad and street in All That Brass, 8.00-9.00pm with Kate Lock.

The Poetry Show: FRIENDS, followed by Stairwell Books Presents: A NEW DAWN for The Poetry Show!

This coming Monday on The Poetry Show: FRIENDS, followed by Stairwell Books Presents: A NEW DAWN for The Poetry Show! plus news about launch events.

The Poetry Show is about poems for everyone: it’s not that stuff you learned in school. This is a podcast that aims to bring poems and poetic discussion to people who love poetry, to those of you who just aren’t all that sure, and to poetry novices…and maybe we can inspire you to try a poem for yourself. A word of warning: we might use a coupla edgy words. We’re kinda PG 13.

Every week, we will discuss a theme, and look at how four very different poets work with the theme to create a poem… Hopefully something for everyone! So we’ll each do a poem, and we’ll chat about that poem and move on to the next.

This episode has Rose, Alan, Becca Miles and special guest Kit Marshall! Today’s show is hopeful and positive. It’s about FRIENDS.

Is this where I break into James Taylor? Don’t we all need friends? Do YOU need friends? Or are they a necessary evil?

Are you the life of the party, or the one hunched over in the corner, talking to the house cat?

Do you have 5,972 close Facebook friends? or are you happily alone?

What does the word ‘FRIEND’ mean to you?

My poems about ‘friends’ were mostly written ages ago, so these are short, old poems. Kind of like me. Tune in to hear what Becca, Alan and Kit have to say about Friends.

* ~ * ~ *

Following our broadcast of S2.1 “Friends”, Alan, Rose and Becca will chat about Big Poetry Show news (Yay!!), Staxtonbury, and upcoming launches. Launch events include David Lee Morgan’s music and poetry event in Sheffield on May 17 at DINA Café, with, first, his visit on May 16 to York open mic BeSpeak (Black Swan, 7.30pm, free).
