SO WHO ARE WE & WHAT DO WE DO?
We are a small hard but working team of goths. Our first event was in 2013 when two of our group decided that they really wanted to attend a high Goth, elegant, masquerade ball in the UK. However, they couldn’t find the sort of event they were after so decided to start their own. From small acorns , hopefully, come mighty oaks as we have seen our event grow over the last 6 years.
The Masquerade Ball has always been the centre piece of our weekend. Elegant, in a prestige venue, in a gorgeous city. Joined by like-minded people, open to all who love dark gothic elegance. We have added both a concert night and a trading event to the ball over the years.
The other two central aims for all our events are to create safe spaces for the alternative gothic community that are open to all who feel different – and to raise funds for charity. In the first two years we raised funds for a local hospice, that does excellent work, but in the last 4 years, we decided to raise for the Sophie Lancaster Foundation as it is a charity close to all our hearts in the alternative scene.
ABOUT THE CONCERT
Our concert will take place on Friday 31st August 2018 at the Fulford Arms between 7:30pm-11pm and features the bands:-
They Called Him Zone – Dark post-punk mixing sultry Electronics and chewed up guitars
Red Sun Revival – Powerful gothic rock with haunting violin melodies
& headlining act Bad Pollyanna – Female fronted, guitar driven hybrid gothic rock!!
ABOUT THE BIZARRE BAZAAR
We will once again be holding the Black Rose Bazaar in the De Grey Rooms on Saturday 1st September between 11:00am -4:00pm. Where a number of handpicked traders will sell unique gothic and alternative handcrafted items, alongside a gothic themed café in the bar area. Tea and cake whilst shopping you know it makes sense.
ABOUT THE BALL
The Jewel in our crown but for now that jewel appears slightly tarnished as this year’s Ball theme is ‘Wasteland’ … an elegant, glamorous and very decadent ball has been interrupted by a post-apocalyptic event… the ball is now only a memory of this elegant affair…. the glory of the event has faded but the party must carry on….
And finally the reason we do this, the charity for which we raise money
THE SOPHIE LANCASTER FOUNDATION
Sophie Lancaster died on the 24th August 2007 following a mindless and savage attack on her and her partner Robert Maltby on the 11th August 2007. The reason for this attack merely that Sophie and Robert were dressed differently. Sophie’s mother Sylvia took the decision that a charity should be set up in her daughter’s name
The Aims of the Charity are as follows *
- To create a lasting legacy to Sophie
- To provide educational work groups that will challenge the prejudice and intolerance towards people from alternative subcultures
- To campaign to have the UK Hate Crime legislation extended to include people from alternative subcultures or lifestyle or dress
* These aims are taken for the Sophie Lancaster foundation website
All of us at Black Rose Events are proud to raise monies for this admirable cause.
