The York Blues Music Festival

Putting on a Blues Festival in their home City of York is something that DC Blues had talked about doing for a while, it’s not something that they have attempted to do before but were spurred in to action following some devastating news when a very close friend & their partner tragically lost their baby at birth. As friends they felt helpless but knew they could attempt to do something positive and music is something they are good at. The Blues Festival is for charity and DC Blues are donating all profits to Charlies Angel Centre Foundation who do fantastic work in providing counselling and supporting bereaved parents.

The event is taking place on Saturday 6th April 2019 at The Crescent Community Venue in York from 1pm-11pm. After putting out a message on Social Media there was an astounding amount of interest from people who wanted to attend as well as over 200 applications from Blues Bands from all over the World who wanted to play.

The bands playing are:-

Mike Darwin
Steve Fulsham Band
Soulcasters
TC Blues Band
Groove-a-Matics
Dogfinger Steve
Emma Wilson Blues Band
Miles Gilderdale
DC Blues
The Achievers (headlining)

Keep your eyes and ears peeled as there will be more information to come on TRR over the next few months as well as a live session from DC Blues in the new year!

National Recovery Month

#NationalRecoveryMonth

Last day of September so here’s the final recovery post from Jayne.

I thought i’d share some of the tips and techniques I’ve used and found helpful.

Distraction: Go for a walk, read, have a bath or shower, watch something you enjoy. Call a friend who supports your recovery.

Stay in the present: Yesterday is history tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift. Don’t see giving up drugs/alcohol as being for a lifetime, take it one day at a time. In my early days the thought of not being able to use my drug of choice ever again was really overwhelming, The thought of getting through more then a day was huge, do it minute by minute, hour by hour if necessary. believe me it all adds up.

Mirror exercise: I found this extremely hard at first but it improved with practice.
Each morning look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself “I am a worthwhile human being, I deserve to be here, I am OK, I am good enough.

Change how you think of abstinence and and the way you speak to yourself.
Instead of saying I Can’t take a drink/drug say I am choosing not to take a drink/drug
Today i am Choosing to stay clean and sober.
Try not to make sweeping statements or make promises such as I will never take drugs or drink again.

Identify what your trigger times are and plan alternatives.

Make a list of what your strengths and good points are: eg,
I am a good friend
I am a good cook
I like my hair
I like the way i dress
I am good at writing poetry

Set a goal each day, even if at the beginning its as small as today I will get up and shower.

Be honest with friends and family about what you are doing.

Stick with others in recovery; Online recovery forums, recovery based social groups, mutual aid support, 12 step meetings.

Write a goodbye letter to your addiction. I found this particularly powerful and it provoked strong emotions so although i highly recommend this exercise, I’d strongly suggest sharing it with or talking it through with someone you trust.

Ask York 4: City Centre Regeneration & Urban Renewal

The Ask York 4 Panel:

  • Pete Kilbane – Chair
  • Imelda Havers – Independent Regeneration Consultant
  • David Dunning – News Editor at Minster FM
  • Cllr. Ashley Mason – Lib Dem
  • Phil Pinder – York Retail Forum

Listen live here at 1pm and again at 5pm.  Click the red bell in the bottom-right of your screen to receive alerts every time Two Rivers Radio is live.

Ask York 4 focused on City Centre Regeneration and there were some fantastic questions and great debate form both the live studio audience and the panel.

Should there be a cross party city summit to tackle #York’s issues on #regeneration and behaviour?  Is there a lack of leadership in @CityofYork on this?

Discussion moves on pedestrianisation of #York – do you think having more #footstreets would be a good thing for the future of the city?

Would a tourist tax help the regeneration of #York asks @GSwinburn? @imeldahavers says as a resident she has no problem with #tourists but stag & hen parties are a strain on resources and we should focus on that.

Would a tourist tax make #York a pariah city or a leader? Views from the floor at #AskYork are largely in favour; lively debate now happening about stag and hen parties!

Phil Pinder of @YorkRetailForum and the other panelists agree that business rates are archaic and should be abolished. @imeldahavers says they are the bane of retailers’ lives.

What can we do with the large empty shops and could they house indoor markets? Phil Pinder of @YorkRetailForum is in favour; @daviddunninguk says demographics have changed; maybe city-centre shops have had their day & focus should be on food/drink/entertainment?

Future of the old BHS centre revealed!

Final question for #AskYork is about #recycling: questioner asks why #York doesn’t have segregated bins in the city centre – the state of #York is an embarrassment!

Great questions and informative answers. This is a not to be missed show for anybody that cares about the future of our city!

Details of the next Ask York to be revealed soon.  We’d love to see you in the live studio audience.  If you have any ideas or thees you would like us to cover please get in touch: tworiversradio@gmail.com
